Bengali music, originating from the Bengal region of South Asia (present-day Bangladesh and India’s West Bengal, Tripura, and Assam), boasts a rich history stretching back over 1300 years. Initially devotional – *bhajan* and *kirtan* focused on Hinduism – it evolved incorporating influences from Persian, Arabic, and eventually Western musical traditions.

Key characteristics include melodic complexity rooted in *raga* structures (though often simplified for wider appeal), use of instruments like the *sitar*, *tabla*, *bansuri* (flute), and a strong emphasis on lyrical poetry, frequently exploring themes of love, devotion, nature, and social issues. Distinct vocal styles vary regionally – *Rabindra Sangeet* (songs of Rabindranath Tagore) is particularly renowned for its lyrical depth and classical foundations.

The 20th century saw diversification into genres like *adhunik gaan* (modern songs), incorporating Western instrumentation. Artists like K.L. Saigal pioneered popular Bengali playback singing in Indian cinema. More recently, bands like Bhoomi (fusion rock) and singers like Runa Laila have achieved international recognition.
