Yo-Yo Ma is scheduled to perform at the Gaillard Center in Charleston, South Carolina on April 4, 2027. Internationally recognized as a cellist of profound artistry, Ma’s musical style transcends traditional classical boundaries. While deeply rooted in the standard cello repertoire, he is known for exploring diverse musical traditions including bluegrass, tango, and collaborations with musicians from various cultures. His performances often emphasize the power of music to connect people and foster understanding.

The Gaillard Center, opened in 2015, serves as Charleston’s premier performing arts venue. It replaced the original Gaillard Municipal Auditorium which had served the city for eighty years prior, opening in 1938. The new facility was designed by Polshek Partnership (now Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects) and boasts a 1,800-seat main hall renowned for its acoustics. The building also houses smaller performance spaces and galleries.

The center hosts a wide range of events including orchestral performances, Broadway shows, dance recitals, and concerts spanning multiple genres. Its construction was part of a larger revitalization effort within Charleston’s historic district and it quickly became a cultural hub for both residents and visitors.
