On April 11, 2027, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig will host a performance featuring works by Werner Egk. Egk (1901-1970) was a Swiss-German composer known for his *Gebrauchsmusik* – a style emphasizing functional music intended for specific occasions and audiences – alongside more traditionally structured concert works. His compositions often blend neo-classical clarity with elements of German Romanticism and occasionally incorporate stylistic references to earlier periods, like the Baroque. He frequently set texts, resulting in notable vocal and operatic pieces, but also wrote instrumental concertos and orchestral works.

The Gewandhaus itself holds significant historical importance. Established in 1743, it originated as a concert series organized by merchants and musicians, quickly becoming a central hub for musical life in Leipzig. The current building, inaugurated in 1981, is the third iteration of the Gewandhaus; its location on Augustusplatz continues a long tradition of public music-making in the city.
