Víkingur Ólafsson is a highly acclaimed Icelandic pianist known for his distinctive interpretations of classical and contemporary repertoire. His performances are characterized by a clear, articulate touch, often highlighting the structural and textural elements within compositions. He frequently explores connections between composers across eras and incorporates lesser-known works alongside established classics, demonstrating a curatorial approach to recital programming. Ólafsson’s discography includes critically lauded recordings of Bach, Philip Glass, and Debussy, amongst others.
The Herkulessaal in Munich serves as the primary concert hall of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. Originally constructed between 1853 and 1855 as part of the Royal Bavarian Army’s equestrian drill hall – hence “Herkules” referencing Hercules – it underwent significant renovation and redesign between 2001 and 2003. This refurbishment, led by architects Auer Weber Assoziierte, transformed the space into a modern concert venue while preserving its historical architectural features. The hall is renowned for its excellent acoustics, specifically designed to accommodate orchestral performances but equally suited to solo instrumental recitals.
