Víkingur Ólafsson is a critically acclaimed Icelandic pianist known for his distinctive interpretations of classical and contemporary repertoire, often characterized by clarity, precision, and a subtly emotive approach. His performances frequently explore the intersection of minimalism, baroque music, and 20th/21st-century composers, alongside established classics. He is recognized for thoughtfully curated programs and innovative album concepts.
Herkulessaal resides within the Residenz, the former royal palace of the Wittelsbach monarchs of Bavaria in Munich. Completed in 1780 under Charles Theodore, Elector and Archduke of Bavaria, it originally served as the court’s opera house. Following damage during World War II, it underwent extensive reconstruction and was reopened in 1961 primarily as a concert hall.
The Herkulessaal is renowned for its exceptional acoustics and opulent Baroque architecture. It’s considered one of Germany’s most significant concert venues, hosting performances by leading orchestras and soloists internationally. The hall's design incorporates stucco work by Wilhelm von Kobell and ceiling frescoes depicting scenes from Greek mythology – specifically relating to Hercules (Herkules in German), giving the hall its name.
