Milton Abbey Church is a significant historical building situated within the grounds of Milton Abbey school. Originally founded as a Benedictine monastery in 933 AD by King Æthelstan, it was one of the wealthiest and most important abbeys in England for centuries. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539 under Henry VIII, the abbey buildings fell into disrepair. In the 18th century, the site was purchased by Joseph Damer, 1st Earl of Dorchester who commissioned architect James Wyatt to rebuild much of the abbey as a country house – incorporating the existing church as its parish church.
