Experience Toshio Hosokawa live on July 30th
On July 30, 2026, the Cairns Performing Arts Centre (CPAC) will host a concert featuring the works of Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa. Hosokawa’s compositions are frequently described as bridging Eastern and Western musical traditions. His style often incorporates elements of traditional Japanese aesthetics – such as *ma* (empty space) and a focus on timbre – with contemporary orchestral techniques. He is known for exploring themes of nature, spirituality, and transience, frequently utilizing extended instrumental techniques and subtle dynamic shifts to create evocative soundscapes. His work spans orchestral pieces, chamber music, opera, and music for traditional Japanese instruments.
The Cairns Performing Arts Centre opened in 1991 and serves as the primary performing arts venue for Far North Queensland. Located on the Esplanade in Cairns City, it comprises two main performance spaces: the larger Barbara Maunder Theatre which seats approximately 1075 patrons and the smaller Mulhern Studio. CPAC hosts a diverse range of performances including theatre, dance, music concerts (both classical and contemporary), comedy shows, and community events. The centre plays a significant role in regional arts provision and aims to foster cultural engagement within the community.
