Experience Tohru Takemitsu live on June 16th
On June 16, 2027, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Germany will host a concert dedicated to the works of Japanese composer Tohru Takemitsu. Takemitsu (1930-1999) is recognized for his unique synthesis of Western contemporary techniques with traditional Japanese aesthetics. His compositions often explore textures of silence and sound, employing extended instrumental techniques and incorporating elements of *gagaku* (Japanese court music) and *noh* theatre. He frequently sought to create a sense of “chôwa,” a Japanese concept relating to harmonious imbalance or controlled discord. His output includes orchestral works, chamber music, solo pieces, film scores, and theatre music.
The Gewandhaus itself holds significant historical weight in the world of classical music. Originally built in 1781, it has been rebuilt twice – in 1878 and again after its destruction during World War II, reopening in 1981. It is renowned for its excellent acoustics and its long association with composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn (who served as its Kapellmeister), Robert Schumann, and Richard Wagner.
