Himmelfahrtskirche, meaning “Ascension Church,” is a significant Protestant church in Dresden’s Neustadt district. Originally constructed between 1708 and 1713 under August the Strong’s direction, it was largely destroyed during the bombing of Dresden in World War II. Reconstruction occurred gradually between 1954 and 1996, resulting in a building that reflects both Baroque architectural principles and post-war restoration techniques. Notably, the church’s tower remained partially intact during the war and serves as a landmark for the area. The interior features a relatively simple design compared to other prominent Dresden churches but is valued for its acoustics and historical significance as a place of worship and community gathering within Neustadt. It frequently hosts concerts alongside religious services.
