The Count Basie Orchestra will perform at the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds on January 31, 2027. The orchestra carries on the legacy of William “Count” Basie, renowned for a signature big band sound characterized by its driving rhythm section, call-and-response arrangements, and emphasis on improvisation. Their repertoire spans decades of jazz standards and original compositions, encompassing swing, blues, and popular song interpretations. The Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds is a Grade II listed building with a history dating back to 1819. Originally constructed as a playhouse and assembly rooms, it underwent significant renovations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It operated as a cinema for a period before reverting to live performance space. The theatre features a traditional proscenium arch stage and an intimate auditorium seating approximately 360 people. It hosts a diverse programme including drama, music, dance, comedy and family entertainment and is noted for its restored Georgian features and commitment to supporting both professional touring companies and local arts groups.
