Takuya Nakamura, a Japanese shakuhachi (bamboo flute) performer and composer, will be appearing in concert at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine on September 4, 2026. Nakamura’s music blends traditional Japanese instrumentation and techniques with elements of ambient, electronic, and world music. He is known for his innovative approach to the shakuhachi, extending its sonic possibilities beyond traditional repertoire through looping, effects processing, and improvisation. His performances often create immersive soundscapes characterized by atmospheric textures and meditative qualities.

The State Theatre originally opened in 1929 as a movie palace and vaudeville house. Designed by architect J.C. Beaumont, it showcased a blend of Art Deco and Italian Renaissance architectural styles. Throughout its history, the venue hosted a variety of performances including film screenings, stage shows, and musical acts. Following periods of decline and renovation – notably in the 1990s – it was restored to its former grandeur and now functions primarily as a live performance venue hosting national touring acts across diverse genres. The theatre boasts a capacity of approximately 1,900 people and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its architectural significance.
