Established in 1949 as the Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR) Big Band, it evolved through mergers to become part of the Südwestrundfunk (SWR) network. The Musik- und Kongresshalle Lübeck opened in 2002 and is a significant cultural venue in the city.
