Originally constructed in 1905 as a Chautauqua auditorium, it was designed by the architectural firm of Ellerbe & Co., later known for designing numerous educational and institutional buildings throughout the Midwest. The building transitioned to a vaudeville house before becoming a full-time motion picture theatre. Facing potential demolition in the 1980s, a community-led restoration effort saved the building, reopening it as a performing arts center in 1986. The theatre now hosts a variety of events including concerts, theatrical productions, films and community gatherings; maintaining much of its original architectural detail and ambiance.
