Alte Aula, translating to “Old Hall” or “Great Hall,” is the historic main auditorium of Heidelberg University. Originally constructed as part of the Old University building in 1712-1714, it served as the primary lecture and ceremonial hall for centuries. The hall features Baroque architecture with ornate stucco work and portraits of notable university figures adorning its walls. Heavily damaged during World War II, Alte Aula underwent extensive reconstruction completed in 1953, faithfully restoring its original appearance. Today, it continues to function as a venue for academic ceremonies, lectures, and musical performances due to its exceptional acoustics and historical significance within the university and the city of Heidelberg.
