Experience Spanish Harlem Orchestra live on August 8th
Spanish Harlem Orchestra will be performing at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Hartford, Connecticut on August 8, 2026. The ensemble is recognized for its dedication to preserving and promoting the tradition of salsa dura – a hard-hitting, rhythmically complex style of salsa originating in New York City during the 1970s. Their music incorporates elements of traditional Cuban son montuno, mambo, and Latin jazz, featuring a large brass section and vibrant percussion. Founded in 2000 by pianist Ricky González, the orchestra aims to recapture the energy and spirit of classic salsa orchestras like those led by Tito Puente and Celia Cruz.
The Church of the Good Shepherd has a history dating back to 1869, originally constructed as an Episcopal church serving Hartford’s growing population. The building is noted for its Gothic Revival architecture, including stained glass windows and detailed stone work. Over time it has become known for its strong community involvement and commitment to arts programming alongside its religious functions. The church's acoustics are frequently utilized for musical performances due to its architectural design and spacious interior. It continues to serve as an active parish within the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut.
