The Smithereens are scheduled to perform at The National in Richmond, Virginia on July 15, 2026. The Smithereens emerged from the New Jersey music scene in the early 1980s and are known for their power pop sound, characterized by driving guitar riffs, melodic vocals, and a blend of influences ranging from The Kinks to garage rock. They gained prominence with singles like “Blood and Roses” and “A Different Girl,” becoming a staple of college radio and later achieving mainstream recognition.
The National, located in Richmond’s historic Fan District, originally opened as a movie theater in 1923. It operated as a cinema for several decades before undergoing renovations to become a live music venue. The building retains much of its original architectural detail, including ornate plasterwork and a grand ballroom feel. Since its reopening as a concert hall in 2008, The National has become a significant performance space attracting nationally and internationally touring artists across various genres. It is recognized for its excellent acoustics and intimate atmosphere despite its capacity of approximately 1,150 people. The venue hosts over 150 events annually.
