His career spans over six decades, encompassing work as a sideman with pivotal artists like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Herbie Hancock, as well as leading his own ensembles. He is known for both his work in post-bop and his exploration of diverse musical styles including Latin jazz and classical music. The Scranton Cultural Center occupies a historic building originally constructed in 1928 as the Masonic Temple. Designed in the Beaux-Arts architectural style by William G. Strickland, it served as a regional Masonic headquarters for many years. In the 1980s, facing financial difficulties, the Masons sold the building to the city of Scranton which subsequently renovated it into a multi-purpose arts venue. Today, it hosts a variety of performances including concerts, theatrical productions, dance recitals and community events within its restored grand hall and smaller spaces.
