Originally constructed as a recreation center in 1925 with funding from the Carmel Community Theater League, it underwent significant renovations following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. These renovations transformed the space into a modern performing arts venue while preserving its historic architectural details. Today, the Sunset Center hosts a diverse range of events including concerts, dance performances, theatrical productions and film screenings. It functions as a non-profit organization dedicated to providing accessible arts programming to the community and supporting artistic endeavors. The building’s design incorporates Spanish Colonial Revival architecture typical of Carmel-by-the-Sea.
