On July 30, 2026, a concert featuring the works of Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks will take place at Segelkirche in Hörnum, Sylt, Germany. Vasks’s musical style is often described as deeply spiritual and intensely expressive, rooted in the traditions of Latvian folk music but incorporating elements of modernism. His compositions frequently explore themes of nature, faith, and human suffering, characterized by a distinctive harmonic language that blends tonal and atonal elements, often employing microtonality and extended techniques. Segelkirche – literally “Sail Church” – is a unique architectural landmark on the island of Sylt. Originally constructed in 1908 as a Protestant church for sailors and fishermen, its interior design intentionally evokes the feeling of being inside a ship's hull. The light-colored wooden structure with its curved beams and numerous windows creates an atmosphere reminiscent of a sailing vessel. Following damage during World War II, it underwent restoration and continues to function as a place of worship while also serving as a venue for cultural events, including concerts benefiting its preservation.
