Orchestra Hall, officially known as the Max M. Fisher Music Center’s Orchestra Hall, opened in 1919 as the Detroit Theatre. Originally designed for vaudeville and film, it underwent significant renovations in the 1980s transforming it into a premier concert venue specifically tailored for orchestral performance. The hall is renowned for its excellent acoustics, achieved through careful architectural modifications during the renovation led by acoustician Russell Johnson. It serves as the primary performance home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and hosts a variety of other musical events throughout the year. The building itself is considered an example of atmospheric theatre design from its original period.
