It stands as a prominent landmark in the town, replacing an earlier medieval chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas – the patron saint of sailors. Heavily damaged during World War II, it was rebuilt between 1958-1961 retaining much of its original architectural character but with some modern adaptations. The church's interior features stained glass windows depicting scenes from the Bible and local maritime history alongside a notable organ that regularly hosts concerts showcasing diverse musical repertoire.
