The English Garden (Englischer Garten) is one of the world’s largest urban public parks, spanning 3.7 square kilometers in the heart of Munich. Established in 1789 by Charles Theodore, Elector of Bavaria, it was designed by landscape architect Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell and initially conceived as an English-style landscape garden – a departure from the formal Baroque gardens prevalent at the time.
