Founded in 1991 by Ron & Pam Nelson, it initially focused on archival work rescuing and restoring historical musical scores. Over time, Mth Theater evolved to include fully staged productions – both classic revivals and new works – as well as cabaret performances and educational programs.

The theater itself is located within the historic Crown Center district in Kansas City, Missouri. It operates the smaller Spencer Theatre alongside its mainstage venue.
