MDR Sinfonieorchester, the symphony orchestra of the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (Central German Broadcasting), presents a concert at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig on June 28, 2026. The orchestra maintains a broad repertoire spanning from Baroque to contemporary music, with a particular focus on German Romantic composers and works by composers from Central Germany, including Mendelssohn, Schumann and Wagner. It is known for its historically informed performance practice alongside modern interpretations.
The Gewandhaus itself holds significant historical and musical importance. Originally established in 1781, it began as a concert hall for a society of musicians – the Gewandhausorchester – and quickly became a focal point for musical life in Leipzig. The current building, opened in 1981, is the third iteration of the Gewandhaus; it was constructed on the site of its predecessors which were both destroyed by fire. Notably, Felix Mendelssohn served as Kapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester from 1835 until his death in 1847, significantly raising its international profile.
