The Teatro Solís is Uruguay’s oldest and most prestigious theatre. Originally conceived in the mid-19th century as a symbol of Montevideo’s growing prosperity and cultural ambition, construction began in 1856 but faced numerous delays due to political instability and financial constraints. The theatre officially opened in 1856, though significant renovations continued into the early 20th century, including substantial work led by Italian architect Carlo Zucchi. Throughout its history it has hosted a diverse range of performances including opera, ballet, theatre productions and musical concerts.
