Rote Fabrik is a culturally significant autonomous social centre located in Zurich’s industrial West district. Originally a dye factory – hence “Rote” meaning “red” – it was occupied in 1980 to prevent demolition and subsequent redevelopment as commercial space. Since then, it has operated as a self-managed cultural hub hosting a diverse range of events including concerts, workshops, exhibitions and political gatherings. The venue comprises multiple spaces including concert halls, bars, studios and a garden. It operates on principles of self-determination and anti-discrimination offering an alternative space for artistic expression outside mainstream institutions. It remains an important example of squatting movements within Switzerland and continues to be run by various collectives and volunteers.
