Experience Krzysztof Penderecki live on July 1st
On July 1st, 2026, a concert dedicated to the works of Krzysztof Penderecki will be held at Saint Brendan's Church in Cork, Ireland. Penderecki (1933-2020) was a significant figure in 20th and 21st-century classical music, known for his innovative and often dramatic compositions. His early work frequently employed extended techniques – unusual methods of playing instruments – to create novel sonic textures, particularly exploring clusters, glissandos, and unconventional bowing techniques. Later compositions demonstrated a shift towards greater tonal clarity and neo-Romantic expression, incorporating elements of Polish folk music and religious themes. He composed in various forms including symphonies, concertos, operas and choral works.
Saint Brendan’s Church, also known as The North Cathedral, is a prominent landmark in Cork City. Constructed between 1864 and 1879 on the site of an earlier medieval church dedicated to Saint Brendan, it is an example of Neo-Gothic architecture designed by J.J. McCarthy. The church features extensive stained glass windows depicting scenes from the life of Saint Brendan and other biblical narratives.
