The National Arts Centre (NAC) in Ottawa serves as Canada’s national performing arts institution, presenting and creating works across various disciplines including music, theatre, dance, and visual arts. Officially opened in 1969, the NAC was conceived as part of Canada’s centennial celebrations. Designed by architect Frederick Holt and Schoeffer Architecture Inc., its Brutalist architecture is a prominent feature of the capital’s landscape.
The NAC hosts both Canadian and international artists, aiming to foster artistic excellence and accessibility. It operates multiple performance spaces including Southam Hall—primarily for orchestral performances—and the Theatre, used for drama, dance and other presentations. The building underwent a significant architectural renovation completed in 2017, expanding its public spaces and enhancing its facilities.
