Joe Hisaishi, born Mamoru Fujisawa, is a highly acclaimed Japanese composer, arranger and conductor, best known for his long-standing collaborative work with Studio Ghibli animation director Hayao Miyazaki. His musical style blends orchestral arrangements with elements of minimalist piano pieces, incorporating influences from classical music, jazz, and world music traditions. Recurring themes in his compositions include nostalgia, nature, and human emotion. He frequently employs leitmotifs – recurring musical phrases associated with specific characters or ideas – to enhance storytelling within his scores.

The concert will be held at the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, a performing arts centre in Singapore. Officially opened in October 2002, the Esplanade was envisioned as a national performing arts centre and has become a landmark building on Marina Bay. Its distinctive design, often described as resembling a durian and mangosteen fruit, houses multiple performance venues including the Concert Hall and the Theatre.
