Jaime Martín, a Spanish conductor and clarinetist, will perform at Christchurch Town Hall on July 26, 2026. Martín is recognized for his versatile musicianship, frequently interpreting both standard repertoire and contemporary works with a noted sensitivity to orchestral colour and phrasing. His conducting style is often described as fluid and insightful, demonstrating a particular affinity for Spanish composers alongside a broad range of international masters. He currently holds the position of Chief Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and is a frequent guest conductor with leading orchestras worldwide.
Christchurch Town Hall reopened in 2019 following extensive repairs necessitated by damage sustained during the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes. Originally constructed in 1972, the building is a significant example of Brutalist architecture in New Zealand, designed by architects Warner & Hall. The Concert Hall within the Town Hall is renowned for its acoustics, specifically designed to accommodate orchestral performances. Prior to earthquake damage, it served as the primary venue for the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and hosted numerous national and international musical acts. The restoration project aimed to retain the hall’s original acoustic qualities while significantly strengthening its structural integrity and upgrading facilities.
