Ibibio Sound Machine is scheduled to perform at Reading Abbey Ruins on September 11, 2026. The band creates a unique sound blending modern electronic music with elements of West African funk, disco, and post-punk. Fronted by Eno Williams’ powerful vocals, their music often incorporates Nigerian languages and instrumentation alongside synthesizers and driving rhythms. They’ve gained recognition for energetic live performances and a distinctive aesthetic that draws from both contemporary club culture and traditional African musical forms.

Reading Abbey Ruins represent the remains of Reading Abbey, founded by Henry I in 1121. It was one of the largest monastic institutions in medieval England, playing a significant role in English history for over 400 years. The Abbey was closely linked to royalty; Henry I and his wife Matilda of Scotland are buried there, though their tombs were destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII in 1539.

Today, the ruins are managed by Reading Borough Council and are a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The site is open to the public as a park and historical landmark, frequently used for outdoor events due to its atmospheric setting and historical significance within the town of Reading.
