Huw Watkins will perform at the Francis Winspear Centre for Music in Edmonton, Alberta, on May 3, 2027. Watkins is a British composer known for a lyrical and richly textured musical style, often drawing inspiration from both classical traditions and elements of folk music. His compositions frequently feature intricate harmonies and a sensitive exploration of instrumental colour, encompassing works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. He has received numerous awards including the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize.

The Francis Winspear Centre for Music opened in 1997 and serves as Edmonton’s premier performance space for orchestral and acoustic events. Designed by architect Norman Payne, the hall is renowned for its exceptional acoustics achieved through a unique “shoebox” design influenced by the Musikverein in Vienna and Symphony Hall in Boston. The hall’s acoustics are further enhanced by adjustable acoustic curtains and a floating concrete structure designed to minimize external vibrations. It is home to the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and hosts a diverse range of performances annually, including classical music concerts, opera, ballet, and popular artists requiring high-quality sound reproduction. The centre also features several smaller spaces used for recitals, receptions, and educational programs.
