Originally opened in 1909 after a design competition won by architects Backer & Grünendahl, it underwent substantial damage during World War II and was subsequently rebuilt and modernized between 1950-1952, reopening with Richard Wagner’s *Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg*. The building represents a Neo-Renaissance architectural style with Baroque influences.
