The Opernhaus Kiel holds a significant place in the cultural landscape of Schleswig-Holstein. Originally opened in 1909 after a design competition won by architects Backer & Grünendahl, the building underwent substantial damage during World War II and was subsequently rebuilt and modernized between 1959 and 1963. The reconstruction retained the original neo-baroque façade while updating the interior to meet contemporary theatrical standards.

Today, the Opernhaus Kiel functions as a multi-disciplinary venue hosting opera, ballet, concerts, and theatrical productions. It serves as the home stage for the Landestheater Schleswig-Holstein’s opera and ballet companies, offering a diverse program throughout the year. The main hall accommodates approximately 1143 audience members.
