Ribe Domkirke is Denmark’s oldest surviving cathedral, with construction beginning around 1150. Originally a Romanesque church built on the site of an earlier wooden chapel commissioned by Ansgar in 865 AD, it underwent significant alterations throughout the medieval period, evolving into its current Gothic style. The cathedral served as the coronation church for Danish monarchs for centuries and holds considerable historical and cultural significance for Denmark. Its architecture includes notable features such as intricate brickwork and several chapels added over time by royal families and prominent citizens. The acoustics within the cathedral are highly regarded, making it a favoured venue for musical performances. The building is currently owned by the Danish state and managed by the National Museum of Denmark.
