Originally a Gothic castle, it underwent significant Renaissance reconstruction in the 16th century under the influence of Italian architects, particularly during the ownership of the Dietrichstein family. This period resulted in the distinctive sgraffito decorations that adorn many of its facades – a technique involving carving through layers of plaster to reveal contrasting colors underneath.

Later ownership passed to Prince Alois II of Liechtenstein who further modified the castle in the 18th century. Today, it serves as a national cultural monument and houses collections from the Moravian Gallery in Brno, focusing primarily on Baroque art and historical furniture.
