The Kostnice U Sv. Jakuba (Ossuary at St. James) is the second-largest ossuary in Europe, after the Catacombs of Paris, holding the remains of over 50,000 people. Established in the 14th century due to limited space in the city’s cemeteries, it initially served as a burial ground for victims of plague and wars. Over time, bones were exhumed to make room for new burials, and eventually stored within the chapel.

The ossuary was rediscovered in 2001 after being largely forgotten and sealed off for decades during the communist era.
