Experience Gewandhausorchester live on June 23rd

Gewandhausorchester Leipzig will perform at the Oper Leipzig on June 23, 2027. The Gewandhausorchester is renowned for its historically informed interpretations of orchestral repertoire, particularly that of the Central German musical tradition – encompassing composers like Bach, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Wagner. The orchestra maintains a distinctive sound characterized by clarity, precision, and a rich tonal palette, developed over its centuries-long history dating back to 1743.

Oper Leipzig holds significant importance within German operatic history. Founded in 1693 as the *Städtische Oper*, it’s one of the oldest civic opera houses in Germany. Richard Wagner was closely associated with the house, serving as Kapellmeister from 1843 to 1849 and premiering several works there. The current building, inaugurated in 1960, replaced earlier structures damaged during World War II. It’s noted for its excellent acoustics and modern stage technology while retaining a traditional opera house layout. Throughout its existence, Oper Leipzig has consistently presented a diverse repertoire spanning Baroque to contemporary compositions alongside maintaining strong ties to the city's musical heritage.
