The Gewandhausorchester Leipzig will perform at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Germany on January 22, 2027. The orchestra is renowned for its interpretation of German Romantic composers – particularly Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Brahms – but maintains a broad repertoire spanning from Baroque to contemporary works. A defining characteristic is its historically informed performance practice, striving for authenticity in sound and interpretation.
The Gewandhaus itself holds significant musical history. Established in 1743, it began as a concert series organized by merchants and quickly became a central element of Leipzig’s cultural life. The current building, opened in 1981, is actually the third iteration; the first Gewandhaus was a repurposed ballroom and the second, built in 1886, was destroyed during World War II.
Felix Mendelssohn served as Kapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester from 1835-1846 and significantly raised its international profile. He championed the works of Bach – notably conducting the *St Matthew Passion* after a period of near oblivion – and established many traditions still observed today.
