St John’s Smith Square holds a significant place in London’s musical landscape. Originally built as a parish church in the early 18th century – consecrated in 1728 – it underwent substantial renovation in the 1950s to transform into a dedicated concert hall. This transformation was spearheaded by Leonard Bernstein who gave its inaugural concert in its new form in 1951. The hall is renowned for its exceptional acoustics, stemming from its Baroque architecture and carefully considered acoustic design. It is particularly favored for chamber orchestral and vocal performances due to its intimate scale – seating approximately 560 people – and warm sound quality.
