Ensemble Aedes is a French vocal ensemble specializing in medieval music, particularly Gregorian chant and polyphony from the 12th and 13th centuries. Their performances are noted for their historically informed interpretation, often utilizing performance practices reconstructed from scholarly research into medieval liturgical contexts and vocal techniques. The ensemble frequently focuses on the works of composers associated with the Notre Dame school of polyphony, such as Léonin and Pérotin.
The Basilique Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Vézelay, France, is a significant example of Romanesque architecture and a major pilgrimage site. Founded in the 9th century, it houses the relics of Mary Magdalene and became a crucial stop on the route to Santiago de Compostela. The basilica’s construction spanned several phases, culminating in its current form around the 12th century. Its architectural features include elaborate sculpted portals depicting scenes from the Bible, notably the tympanum of the west portal featuring Christ in Majesty. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, the basilica’s acoustics are renowned for their resonance and suitability for vocal music.
