Ensemble Aedes is a vocal and instrumental ensemble specializing in medieval music, with a particular focus on the repertoires of France and England from the 12th to 15th centuries. Their performances are characterized by historically informed interpretation, utilizing reconstructions of period instruments and exploring the original performance contexts of the works they present. The ensemble frequently focuses on polyphonic vocal music, often drawing from monastic sources and illuminated manuscripts.
The Abbaye Sainte-Trinité De Lessay, located in Lessay, Normandy, France, is a former Benedictine abbey with origins dating back to the 11th century. Founded in 1056 by Robert I, Duke of Normandy, it quickly became a significant religious and cultural center. The abbey church, largely constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries, is notable for its Romanesque architecture – specifically its impressive barrel-vaulted nave which remains one of the largest surviving examples of Norman Romanesque architecture. During the French Revolution, the abbey was secularized and subsequently used for various purposes including as a hospital and storage facility. Extensive restoration work has been undertaken since the mid-20th century to preserve this historical landmark.
