Deafheaven is scheduled to perform at Val-Air Ballroom in West Des Moines, Iowa on October 16, 2026. The band is generally categorized as post-black metal, a genre blending elements of black metal – characterized by tremolo picking, blast beats, and often harsh vocals – with shoegaze and post-rock influences. This results in a sound incorporating atmospheric textures, melodic passages, and dynamic shifts alongside more aggressive metal components. Formed in San Francisco, California in 2010, Deafheaven has gained recognition for albums like *Sunbather* (2013) which significantly broadened the scope of black metal’s sonic palette.

Val-Air Ballroom holds a notable place in music history. Originally constructed in 1939 as a WPA project during the Great Depression, it quickly became a popular dance hall and performance venue. Throughout the mid-20th century, it hosted numerous nationally recognized big band and swing acts including Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey.
