Chanticleer, an ensemble renowned for its precise vocal blend, expressive phrasing, and adventurous programming, will perform at Mission Santa Clara de Asís on December 23, 2026. The group typically presents a repertoire spanning Renaissance polyphony, jazz, spirituals, and contemporary compositions – often commissioning new works. Their performances are characterized by an a cappella sound featuring twelve male voices.

Mission Santa Clara de Asís, founded in 1777 by Franciscan friar Junípero Serra, represents the eighth of California’s 21 missions. Originally situated closer to the Guadalupe River, the mission experienced significant damage from repeated flooding. The current church building dates primarily from 1825, constructed after the original was severely impacted. It served as a parish church for a time after the mission system’s secularization in 1833.

Throughout its history, the Mission has been associated with education; it became Santa Clara University in 1851. The site reflects a blend of architectural styles resulting from rebuilding efforts following natural disasters and periods of change in religious and educational use.
