Experience Caroline Shaw live on January 31st
Caroline Shaw will perform at Hertz Hall, located on the University of California, Berkeley campus, on January 31, 2027. Shaw is a composer, violinist, and vocalist whose work frequently blends elements of classical music with influences from pop, folk, and electronic music. Her compositions are often characterized by textural complexity, vocal experimentation, and a playful approach to form. She received the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2013 for her piece *Partita for Eight Voices*, an a cappella work demonstrating her innovative vocal writing.
Hertz Hall originally opened in 1972 as part of the new campus design following the Free Speech Movement era. It was conceived as a flexible performance space intended to support a wide range of musical genres and ensembles. The hall is known for its relatively intimate size – seating approximately 300 people – and its acoustical properties which are considered particularly well-suited for chamber music and vocal performances. Renovations occurred in 2016 to improve accessibility and update technical infrastructure while maintaining the hall’s original acoustic character. The hall regularly hosts student recitals, faculty concerts, and performances by visiting artists affiliated with the UC Berkeley Department of Music.
