Classical Concerts in Portsmouth

Experience Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra live on March 4th

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is a British orchestra renowned for its versatile repertoire, encompassing core classical works alongside contemporary compositions and film scores. Established in 1893, the orchestra has a long tradition of championing British music and fostering educational initiatives. Their performances are characterized by technical skill and expressive interpretations across a broad range of musical periods.

Portsmouth Guildhall, the venue for the 2027-03-04 concert, holds significant historical and cultural importance for the city. Originally constructed in 1890 as the Portsmouth Town Hall, it was designed by local architect Owen Davies in the Gothic Revival style. The building served its original civic function until 1941 when it sustained damage during bombing raids in World War II. Following extensive restoration, it reopened in 1959 primarily as a performance and events venue.

The Guildhall features a main hall with a capacity of approximately 1,400 and hosts a diverse program including concerts, conferences, exhibitions and theatrical productions. Its acoustics have been updated over time to accommodate orchestral performances and other musical events.
