Its acoustics are highly regarded, achieved through a variable geometry hall – meaning its shape can be adjusted to suit different ensemble sizes and musical demands.

The Musikforum Ruhr was named in honour of Anneliese Brost, a significant patron of the arts in the Ruhr region who actively supported musical life locally. The building itself forms part of the Ruhr University Bochum campus but operates as an independent cultural institution.
