De Gouwekerk itself holds historical significance within Gouda. Originally constructed in 1607 as the Sint Janskerk, it served as a place of worship for the Dutch Reformed Church for nearly four centuries. Facing declining congregation numbers and significant maintenance costs, the building was deconsecrated in 2018. Following extensive renovations, it reopened in 2021 repurposed as a cultural center and event space. The building retains many of its original architectural features, including stained-glass windows and a distinctive tower, while now hosting a diverse range of events including concerts, exhibitions and conferences. Its acoustics are considered particularly well-suited for musical performances due to its high vaulted ceilings and stone construction.
