The Ruins of St. Bertin Abbey in Saint-Omer represent a significant historical and architectural landmark. Founded in 638 AD by Saint Bertin, it was initially a monastery that became a powerful Benedictine abbey during the Middle Ages. The abbey played a crucial role in the region’s religious, political, and intellectual life for over ten centuries. Largely destroyed during the French Revolution in 1793, substantial portions of the abbey church remain standing today as evocative ruins.
