Ablaye Cissoko will perform at Gesù, a former Jesuit church in Montreal, on July 9, 2026. Cissoko is a Senegalese kora player and vocalist whose music blends traditional West African griot traditions with contemporary influences including jazz and blues. His performances often feature intricate kora melodies alongside vocals in Wolof and French, exploring themes of spirituality, social commentary, and personal narrative. He is recognized for his virtuosity on the kora, a 21-string bridge-harp used extensively in West African musical traditions, and his collaborative work with artists across various genres.

Gesù, located in the heart of Montreal’s entertainment district, was originally constructed between 1855 and 1857 as the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church. It was later acquired by the Jesuits in 1904 and renamed Gesù. The building is noted for its High Victorian Gothic architecture and elaborate interior ornamentation including frescoes and stained glass windows. In recent decades, Gesù has transitioned into a multi-purpose cultural venue hosting a diverse range of performances including concerts, theatre productions, and exhibitions while retaining its historical character.
